What's Holding Up "The Dark Knight" Sequel?

"The Dark Knight" has broken lots of records and reached some amazing goals. It took the film 18 days to reach the $400 million domestic benchmark, fastest ever. It had a worldwide IMAX gross of $49.8 million, highest ever. It earned $158.4 million during its opening weekend, best ever. And it has currently grossed $489.4 million in domestic box office, second highest ever.

Now, the movie is moving on to a new challenge, as Heath Ledger is being pushed by Warner Bros for year-end awards. He is almost certain to win a Golden Globe nomination -- and might well be up for an Oscar.

A DVD release of the film is said to be planned for the holidays (the studio won't confirm a date). And Warners and Legendary are both interested in doing a third in the series, but all involved say it will be up to director Christopher Nolan to come to them with a story and a plan.

"There are a lot of us who emotionally would love to do it," said producer Chuck Roven. "But it's really Chris' call. Chris is the kind of filmmaker who just doesn't think about the next movie before he has completely finished the movie he is working on."

For now, Nolan is taking a well-earned vacation. "When he comes back, we will see how he feels," said Roven.

    I think for the villain, I would be interested in seeing The Monk, Bane,and then we need a good female villain so either Catwoman or Harley Quinn.

    If theirs a third film, cause THE DARK KNIGHT is the sequel to BATMAN BEGINS, I realy which Scarecrow/Crane, Killer Croc, and Deadshot apear on that film. Or at least Scarecrow/Crane, The Riddle and Catwomen or Poison Ivy. But they should look MORE creepy and darker than before. I dont know why, but in this summer, all superhero villains were more scary/darker than before. I think this new villains or recreation of them look that way, so it can make us believe they are worth to watch. And I will see it no matter what! But at least...Scarecrow/Crane should be there, if not, I will be sad, but I will see it anyway, hehe.

    I highly doubt they'll be bringing Two-Face back. His death really was a bit ambiguous, at least because so many people didn't want him to die, but I read the manuscript and it even says that Dent falls and breaks his neck leaving him dead. I'd like to see Riddler + Catwoman to be totally honest. Talia al Ghul would be interesting though as well. Kind of tie in the first film to the third.

    Hrmm...I'm looking forward for the new movie but I'm not really keen as much as all I wanted to see was actually Joker/Heath Ledger but we all know it won't be possible though.So, *sigh* (I'm trying to be positive here)lets get it on with the new movie yeah!

    it was already known that the next movie was going to be mainly about the Joker. but now they are going to have to star almost from scratch. there was mention about the Penguin being in it with Two Face again. i honestly think the way they made Two Face in that one, they could also do an entire movie around him. they made him just as nuts as in the comics

    what's holding up the sequel? the fact that what was probably planned to be the major storyline of the next film is now shot, or at least in huge jeopardy. obviously Joker was gonna be used in the next film, and now they have to seriously consider dumping that and starting from scratch (big problem), or recasting (even bigger problem). so yeah...don't expect a DK sequel in the next two years, at least.

    If it means the longer the wait, the better it is, take as long as you want! It will be hard to beat this one simply because the villain was so original, they need to make a new villain, not a new character, but style an original character in a different way e.g. riddler! And please don’t make it a trilogy, I want to see more and more of these! They are the best superhero movies ever! Keep the movies coming but obviously don’t make us wait another 3 years or more for the next!
