Plot: A lonely boy discovers a mysterious egg that hatches a sea creature of Scottish legend.
Magnificent! Sad, intruiging, I absolutely loved it! So much meaning to do with childhood, and mythical beliefs
A British classic approach to sweet children's stories of sad old days in wartime, THE WATER HORSE underlines the fact that one of the most important factors in strange creatures stories is to create a lovely protagonist such as Crusoe. Entertaining and likeable...
Water Horse: The Legend of the Deep, takes place in Scotland during WWII; where a family is taking care of a large mansion near Lock Ness. Again a parent is missing, this time it's Dad, who?s been killed in the war, but the youngest son refuses to acknowledge the fact, leading to a couple of dramatic moments. The boy finds a strange egg in the Lock, takes it home to Dad?s shop, where it hatches a small aquatic monster during the night. When the boy first finds the beast, it?s a fairly creepy scene, at least as far as kids movies go. I was surprised it didn?t scare my son to death, with the dramatic music, dark lighting, weird noises and flashing lightning. But he got through it just fine, although I?m not sure most 4-year-olds could handle it.
Afterwards little Nessie is pretty cute, and the boy, his sister and the new maintenance-man make a pact to keep the beast hidden from mom, who obviously wouldn?t approve. This leads to a couple of ridiculous scenes, where the group is force to hide this quickly growing beast in toilets and so forth. Meanwhile, the Scottish army has also set up base on the house?s grounds, believing that a German submarine may find it?s way into the Lock. Soon Nessie is far too large to be kept around the house, leading to a tearful goodbye as they release her into the Lock. But she remains a good friend with the boy Angus, taking him on an exciting underwater ride, hypothermia free and all. Of course there?s a convoluted mix-up with the army, and soon they?re bombing the Lock, leading to all kinds of dramatics surrounding Nessie?s new home.
While nowhere near a great film, I thought that Water Horse was a much more interesting film than the previous one. Some of the effects are pretty laughable, especially when the boy takes a ride on Nessie?s back, but for the most part they sell this fantastical idea. They handle the friendship between the boy and Nessie pretty well, it definitely has an E.T. vibe to it. The Scottish, WWII setting also makes it interesting to watch. Plus the filmmaking is just plain better, there?s some attention to details, with nice photography, good set and costume design, and some good English actors lending their talents; including Brian Cox as the narrator, Emily Watson as the mother, Ben Chaplin as the new maintenance-man and young Alex Etel as Angus is very strong. (Also see him in one of the best family films from the last few years, Millions.) I?d say that the film is well enough made, that it?s actually a worthwhile film if you don?t have kids, although you certainly have to suspend your disbelief for certain scenes.
Original written for What I Watched Last Night
The only reason I gave that rating was of the water horse. That was the only thing cute in the movie. Its just like other movies that people story tell.
A little predictable and there was not enough cg but overall the film was pretty well done. The biggest disappointment is the vibe that the film projects. It appears to be trying to get the audience to be very emotional with the actions that the characters do and even in films choice in actors. All of them have had done some other film that has made the audience pretty emotional, however, this film cant harness this ability. In the scenes that look like they can get ppl crying, I was not moved enough to the point that I'd have tears running down my face. Since the film fails on what it seems to be trying to accomplish, I only give it a barable mark.
Just some story about some tale about a water horse in Loch Ness, Scotland... The movie itself was good by keeping the cast from the British side, they didn't have an American man because it will kill the movie... The effects for Crusoe, the water horse, was great... It was looks like really live in this world... And it's not a bad story at all for kids, but they need a parenting guide from their parents of course for some scenes...
this movie was SO stupid. i could not follow the storyline, so me and my friend just fast forwarded it. then started commenting on some/all the parts. haha.
Was better than I was expecting it to be. Although unfortunately I didn't get to experience the Scottish accents as I watched it in French.
"Meu Monstro de Estimação" é um filme pouco inspirado que acaba seguindo a lógica de fórmulas cinematográficas.
A perfect movie just for kids. Other than appreciating the amazing graphics this movie offers, I simply find most of the other parts(not involving the water horse) a little too ridiculous. They made WW2 soldiers look so stupid.
Walden Media, the production house that create The Chronicles of Narnia made another based-on-novel-fantasy movie. I was interested to watch this movie, because i thought it was a good one. But I'm wrong, well not totally wrong.
What's wrong with this movie? Well, I've noticed that this movie main mistake was on the cast. No extraordinary cast in this movie. Alex Etel's and Priyanka Xi's performance remind me of those stupid Pevensie's (You know what I mean right?). In this movie, Emily Watson was the best of the rest I might say, while Ben Chaplin's wasn't good but averagely quite (maybe almost) acceptable.
I could give more stars to this movie if those cast could perform better. This movie has a brilliant score (similar to the Narnias) and great story. Beside, the special effects of the movie was a nice one, and so smooth. I was concern about around the end of the movie (in the climax), I felt for a while like I was watching some horror movie such as Primeval, etc, but I know that's one the strength of the story or the movie itself. Last thing that I concerned was some of needless scene like the interruption of the narration, which bring us back to the old Angus (this movie was a flashback).
After all, for my last words, this movie was a decent one and suited for family. Light entertainment and sweet creature was featured here. And just for my last info, this was one of the (fiction) story based on the Loch Ness Monster's Legend.
wonderful film, a well told and well demonstrated story... the young actor who plays the friend of the water horse is truly talented. a little sad at points for the younger set it is still fantastic for the whole family.
Likeable enough, user friendly family fare. Predictable and safe to show to Grandma. A little too cute for it's own good at times, but for the most part, very entertaining. Emily Watson is great as usual and the New Zealand support cast were fun to pick out for me. The moral seems to be that even the most strange and unique creatures get annoyed when you try to blow them up. Who'da thunk it? Save it for the kids or the adults with a soft spot for cutesy movies.
My expectations were higher than they should have been. It;s not as fantastic as everyone saying it is- but granted: it's still a good choice for the school holidays; that is if they don't mind a handful of somewhat potentially frightening scenes.
This is a charming wee movie. Instantly fell in love with the Water Horse like a soppy broody female. Any kid will be begging their parents for a water horse - I would too but I'm 25 and that would seem just plain odd I think lol!
Definitely better than I imagined. Instead of some creature not many would know about, this film's actually about the Loch Ness Monster: and thanks to Weta Digital, he's never looked better, nor cuter. If it's a peaceful, family's creature feature you want, then look no further!
I loved his film: The characaters were real, the special effects were not overwhelming, and the World War setting was great.
Divertida jajajaja y me gusto que las peliculas se basen en esas fantasias tan hermosas que ha creado el ser humano junto con la naturaleza y me gusta mucho la fotografia
This was actually a whole lot better than i'd anticipated!
Its very well done and great family fun, the effects are really good too with the mythical beast actually looking very realistic!
Its also set in WWII and the period seems perfectly set for such a story and the beginnings of the tale of the legendary Loch Ness monster...
This is definitely a friendly version of a water horse. There are many legends of these creatures, and they are always evil, blood thirsty, and full of malice!
Oh I want to live near Scotland.
Pretty good movie about what you expect from previews is what you would get from movie no more no less. Pretty good special effects when water horse had just hatched. Ending is predictible as could be since we have seen it over and over again in movies still entertaing and I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed it. The story is pretty standard. I really appreciated the way they captured the movement of the "monster" in the water - the artist and animal lover in me approves.
A lovely, sweet and charming saga about the Loch Ness creature. It's similar with other movies in this genre (boy meets animal/creature) like E.T. and so on. The story is as usual warm and the ending is teardripping.
The storyline was very very familiar, ok..to be fair it has been repeated over a million billion tiimes but it didnt stop them from making yet another movie based on it right? horrible movie

It was a cute movie. I really liked all the Scottish accents (I'm a sucker good accents) and the CG rocked. It was truly a good story and perfect for a family movie night. Go SCOTS!
I loved this movie but it was sad when he had to say goodbye. I started to cry.

I love anything that has to do with the Loch Ness monster and I have done extensive research on the subject. I can NOT wait to see this movie!!
