Plot: The Buckman family is a midwestern family all dealing with their lives: estranged relatives, raising children, pressures of the job, and learning to be a good parent and spouse.
Lovable film about the struggles of parenthood through the different perspectives of different types of parents. Steve Martin and Dianne Wiest are outstanding, this is one of Ron Howards better films.
So I turned on the TV waiting for 'Pulp Fiction' to be on and this was on. I had missed maybe half-an-hour and I didn't know it was 'Parenthood' until at least an hour in. I never really wanted to see this movie. I had gotten lots of question on it in trivia games but ever since I was little I would see this poster for this movie where Steve Martain is holding kids upsidedown and looking nuts and it scared me. But really it was the line 'You know why I have sex toys? Because I decided to have kids and your father decided to go off and have a party! Now you need to show me some respect, not a lot just some!" Dianna Wiest gave that line and I was hooked! If anything she did have the funnier storyline, and the best lines but overall it was a very funny movie that I was glad to run into. And a good cast too! Keanu Reeves was a surprise but who did Joaquin Phoenix play? I'll look that up. And directed by Ron Howard! I didn't know that! Well now I've seen it and it was pretty good; if I ever found it in a bargin barrel, I might get it. But you gotta love '80's comedy!
I was thinking the other day that Joaquin Phoenix was the young pre-teen boy in this movie. Checked here and I was right. The scene at the end when there were babies and pregger ladies resembles my sisters and sis-in-law when i was in college. Everyone was pregnant except for my mother and I! It was crazy!
Cllassic Steve Martin, sadly remembered for that cowboy birthday party scene. Trust me, there is more. If anything, this is an underrated Drama. New parents (like me) will find plenty to love, and older parents will need a new pair of pants ready. Very funny, sad, realistic and serious. The cast are teriffic throughout, look for an especially young Keanu Reeves in the role he was born for!!! We are all this dysfunctional to some degree,..... right? Fun, sad and ultimately very entertaining!
"I think your grandmother is brilliant!"
"Yeah well if she's so brilliant why is she sitting in our neighbors car?"
If you want to take some of the most wonderful events in life and turn them into negatives then this is the film for you.
You might have to meet it half way with the family dynamics cliches, but hey, for all I know they wern't cliches when this nearly 20-year old film was released. But what is surprising are the moments that ring true. I really felt for Dianne Wiest's character during her date with her little speech about not being old enough to be a grandmother. "I went to Woodstock, for Christ's sake!" What was most unexpected was the confrontation with the black sheep son with a gambling problem. There's a moment of revealing desperation and pity in his refusal to be like his brother. The final montage scene in the hospital is touching too, albeit a little distantly. Oh, and I definetly wasn't expecting contemplation of abortion and a very explicit reference to oral sex. O_O
Steve Martin plays the frustrated family man better than anyone in hollywood. Here he is cast as the head of a midwestern family that is bedevilled by usual problems arising within extended families. Parenthood is a particularly good film because it glorifies the concept of parenthood whilst portraying the difficulties that come up with reaching that stage in life.
Interesting film, which isn't very funny. It is still affecting, as it manages to show pretty much every aspect of parenting, from the spoiling, to the over-bearing, to the desperate, to the lack of caring.
The wonderful cast is perfect, and does indeed seem very real. I find it very hard that Steve Martin didn't get an Oscar nod for his work here, as he was very good. Dianne Wiest was very deserving of hers.
I loved when that old bastard finally realises who the 'good' son actually is at the end. Nice movie. Love when Steve comes out of the bedroom with the vibrator!!
this is phenomenal fim...never has family life been captured better on film...not matter who u r or wat family u came from u gotta relate 2 some aspects of this film!!!
Martha Plimpton was basically the reason I watched this, she's an awesome actress. There's some funny lines in this too.
Parenthood Has So Many Charachters But It Gets To Them Well No One Is LEft Out The Whole Story The Movie Is All Sweet And Lovable It's A Very Good Family Movie Very Likable
Good film! Stupid in parts, but that's part of its charm. Some classic family moments that remind me why I never want to have children.
Tjhis is the first movie I saw Keanu reeves in. This story is so funny, but resonates what a lot of families go through daily!
It's an okay familie movie, not amazing, but okay. Watch it with your family a sunday evening when you've got nothing else to do
great movie, a perfect blend of comedy and drama that brings the best out in all of its actors...even Keanu!!
-"He likes banging things with his head. -You must be so proud." -"If Grandma's so smart , why's she in the neighbor's car?"
Classic movie, with all the details of life. Three different families facing everyday issues, divorce, children, the troubles with teenagers.
This movie always makes me laugh. The characters were great with a lot of well known faces.
I think everyone should watch this movie. I can guarentee you will see yourself in at least one of the families, if not the characters.
This cover box makes it seem like a slap stick comedy but it has great scenes that are really truthful about the nature of family and love and at the same time will make you laugh.
i used to rent this all the time as a kid and drove my mother batty with it. got a wicked cast, most of the kids in this are now really famous- keanu reeves and joaquin phoenix being two of them- proper family slapstick comedy
while it has lots of serious parts, this movie is very touching in dealing with the struggles and the relationships of husbands, wives and parents
This movie is good. The best character is the little blond haired kid of Steve Martin and Mart Steenburgen that wears a buket on his head and bangs his head against the wall.
