Richard Swersey (John Hawkes), a newly single shoe salesman and father of two boys, is prepared for amazing things to happen. But when he meets the captivating Christine, he panics. Life is not so oblique for Richard's seven-year-old Robby, who is having a risqué internet romance with a stranger, and his fourteen- year-old brother Peter who becomes the guinea pig for neighborhood girls -- practicing for their future of romance and marriage.

very formulaic "indie" on a few viewings, but there's some segments here that will always have a place in my heart.

Christine Jesperson: [seeing his bandage] Whoa, what happened?
Richard Swersey: You want the short version or the long one?
    Christine Jesperson: The long one.
Richard Swersey: I tried to save my life but it didn't work.
Christine Jesperson: Wow. What's the short one?
    Richard Swersey: I burned it.

Here's a little movie that easily fits into the category of offbeat and quirky, but that is never a bad thing if its an enjoyable experience.

Writer and director Miranda July, who also stars in the film and is in fact a contemporary artist besides filmmaker, shows a story containing a number of characters, most living in the same neighborhood, all communicating in a way that would be understood by what the title suggests applied to them.

The biggest star would be John Hawkes, a man who has appeared in plenty of small roles over the years, and is probably recognized by moviegoers as "hey its that guy." Here he is a recently separated man, trying to make his new home work for him and his two boys.

Robby: Ask her if she likes baloney.

The two boys also have events going on in their lives, including internet chat room conversations that they are too young to be involved in, and their relationship to the neighboring girls.

One of these girls has a hope chest full of items for when she gets married, she's probably around 11 years old. Two other girls deal with a conversation they were to young to be having with an older man and what could be...

Then there's July's character, Christine who has a cab service for the elderly as well as a life in creating contemporary art, submitting it to people who have their own ways in considering what's "good."

So all of this could sound like a jumble when describing it, but it is a wonderful indie comedy, full of moments that are very nice and poignant.

Andrew: Dude, did you just give her the family discount?
Richard Swersey: Yeah. She's my neighbor, and I'm trying to work on my karma. Do you know what karma means?
    Andrew: Yeah.
Richard Swersey: It means that she owes me one.

Along with the characters, the soundtrack too, is very quirky, and even goes to the point of fitting in some Cody Chestnut tunes, an artist I particularly like, so kudos.

The characters are all well handled. The actors know what they are doing, particularly some of these child actors, the youngest son is also very adorable.

This movie isn't as much about having a defined plot, as it is about showing a few weeks in the lives of these people and what comes from chance encounters, followed by certain character arcs and resolutions to the all of the little strands.

It's a large ensemble movie that gave me the same sort of curious and comforting feeling I got when I watched Amelie or Punch-Drunk-Love for the first time.

    Very nice and offbeat movie.

Richard Swersey: Yeah, the "Ice Land" sign is halfway. It's the halfway point.
Christine Jesperson: Ice Land is - It's kind of like that point in a relationship, you know, where you suddenly realize it's not going to last forever. You know, you can see the end in sight. Tyrone Street.
Richard Swersey: Yeah, but we're not even there yet. We're still at the good part. We're not even sick of each other yet.
Christine Jesperson: I'm not sick of you at all.

A quintessential indie romantic comedy (if there is such a thing). Miranda July is an absolute joy, and the various parts that come together make up a tender, complex story. (The scene where she goes beserk and F's everything off is pure brillance!)

This was very touching - and a very distinct way of showing the great divide between kids and grown ups, how adults are longing for the carefree life of the child, and the child is longing for the empowerment they think is connected with being an adult. The acting was very touching too, a plesant surprise.

Wonderful! One of the most poetic, touching, delicate films I've ever seen, even when it deals with themes that in other movies would be shocking...

Movie walks a razor thin line between, cute, disturbing, and annoying, but all with the grace of a ballerina. Ive heard mixed reviews of Miranda July's fiction, but there is no denying her prowess as a film maker. This romantic comedy and ensemble peice, is one of those unnexpectedly funny, moving, awkward, human, and complex indie films that comes around once every years, and gets imitated to death ever after. Fortunately "Me And You And Everyone We Know" has not begun to loose it's freshness just yet. July, uses her characters as vessels for musings on love, death, technology, sexuality, and lonliness. None of the characters in the story are one dimensional, everyone is entangled, and everyone is leading lifes of qiuet desperation. Through chance encounters, diverse yet familiar characters are brought together. In some of the, indeed, most adorable, and at times extremely discorfmiting scenes your likely to see(if your touchy about children and sexuality you might want to steer clear), but all are treated with the same sense of honesty that keeps the film from feeling cheap or melodramatic. It's a movie about the things which hold us together in the modern world, and those things which keep us apart, childhood mysteries, and adult magic. It's a romantic comedy, that doesnt feel in any way cleche(a very rare thing). I didnt love it the first time I saw it, but after repeat viewings I love it more and more. As good as "Punch Drunk Love", "High Fidelity", "Closer", "Before Sunsirse", and those literate hip romantic dramedies, which have come before it. Also just as enjoyable, and bolstered by its ensemble cast, instead of focusing on just one couple, or couples in general. Anyway I love it, its an easy film to love, July is going to be a film maker to watch in the future.

Whoa!! Director Miranda July is certainly in the same league as Todd Solondz and Gregg Araki in the 'weirdness' category. This little tale of a thinly joined group of imperfect people is a bit of a tough watch, very arty and alot strange. The acting is decent and the story is a bit like a pile of vignettes, but if you don't mind a Sundance special that adresses 'child sexuality' and a guy setting himself on fire within the first 5 minutes, then you might like a few aspects of this self indulgent mess. Definitely not for young audiences.

Miranda July is the most lovable mildly deranged artist on screen. John Hawkes is a depressing but relatable self-hater. Brad William Henke is a seemingly normal friend and closet pedophile. In the process of watching this film you may be amazed, enlightened and offended all at the same time, but the point and the beauty in finishing it is how it all fits together to form something much more than the sum of its parts.

In You & Me & Everyone We Know a whole community is focussed on, the film picks up on there interactions and they're wants and needs to be a part of something. It offers some really good performances from stars you don;t usually see in anything more than supporting roles John Hawkes in particular stood out to me but the script and the ensamble cast worked so well they all deserve credit.

This felt totally real, yet completely bizzare. A "slice of life" type film, with a twisted edge.

Featuring a cast of characters who while emotionally "disturbed" in various degrees... are all still completely likeable and captivating.

This strange and often surreal tale would not have been as engaging if it weren't for the excellent cast attached to it.

The ENTIRE cast was superb, including the younger memebers, who (for me) "break" more often then "make" a film.

FANTABULOUS!! definitively, it's a fantabolous film, so poetical, so disconcerting, so emotive. miranda july writes and directs this wonderful movie, about solitude, strange people looking for the missing part in their lives, little stories that make you feel confortable in your own weirdness, safe on your (green) skin...

the atmosfere is beautiful, pink walls, absurd and deep porn chats, lovelly rare love stories, child escapist dreams, a burnt hand, and that music you don't want to end... and of course, great dialogues: 8 years old girl with department store seller: do you think that in 20 years that mixer will be a bassic piece of modernity? / i'm not sure, 20 years is a lot of time... and everything will be computerized / not soup / why not? / it's liquid... great. yes, fantabulous...

I couldn't believe how amazing this movie is. It's been a while since I've seen such perfect dialog and characters. You just want to hug and kiss everyone in it. "In 20 years everything will be digital." "No it won't. Not soup." "Why not?" "Because it's a liquid." It makes me want to talk to strange people and just be interested in life again.

i bought this film before actually having heard anything about it, i picked it up because the sypnoses alone intrigued me and i saw it was distributed by IFC so i knew it was a keeper. I was definetely right, this film has to contain some of the most beautiful character who are so real and down to earth but yet seem to portray a higher sense of beauty in them. It's a story about love, loss of innoncence, tragedy, growing up, discovery, and most of all life.

Interesting character study by performance artist Miranda July: Though it is more than a little in love with itself, it's not a bad little film. Some interesting scenes, and the presence of the easy-on-the-eyes Brad William Henke made it a worthwhile viewing.
