MCT:August 16, 2008A decent looking girl is gang raped multiple times and goes on a revenge rampage. If you can stomach the graphic scenes it's not a bad movie.

MCT:August 14, 2008Being one of the most famous of the Grindhouse exploitation films of the 1970's, I Spit On Your Grave is one of the most graphic films you'll ever see. A woman from New York City comes to the country for a summer of peace and writing but ends up practically destroyed by four testosterone fueled maniacs. She survives the attacks and seeks her revenge on the men that left her violated and near death.
I Spit On Your Grave is a pure exploitation flick for the sake of exploitation. Opinions vary on whether this film is a statement of woman fighting back against male oppression or garbage. I have to vote for garbage. The cat and mouse 20 minute rape scene is nauseating to watch-and that's why people watch it. It's the old car wreck analogy. You don't want to watch, but you do. And of course this gets asses in the seats. Most of my complaints about the violation scenes would be a little tamer if the second half of the film didn't seem like something tacked on to turn a pseudo snuff film into a feature. The victim doesn't burn to the end of the film in a blaze of glory but seems to dim as we get closer to the ending. Obviously this film was made for that 20 minute cat and mouse chase.
So why does I Spit On Your Grave still fascinate after all these years. It's the sick human mind. If you want an example check out either Roger Ebert or Gene Siskel's reviews of the film (mainly for their takes on the audiences they viewed it with).
I Spit is pure '70's exploitation garbage of the lowest sort: a softcore porno that many view to have a heart but doesn't even have a brain (unless you count the one in its pants). -
MCT:August 8, 2008i loved it. people keep whining about the rape scene being too long but think: why else would you watch a rape scene but to be terrified and disgusted?? and to be honest that takes a little longer than 30 seconds for me.... some real scary stuff, that creeps me out way more than the crap thats come out in the last 10 years... and to you people who tried banned this in the UK 30+ years ago: shame on you. I mean what do you really expect from a film called "i spit on your grave"??

MCT:August 5, 2008A very tasteless and ridiculously straightforward film. Nothing that shocking, but it is known for being one of the Video Nasties. I was having a hard time getting through this: Not because of the "intensity" but because it moved at a snail's pace during the first sixty minutes. The murders aren't all that great (And still I felt sorry about the dude in the tub. Poor guy.) and it's the revenge premise plus the stretched out rape scenes that made this movie eligible for being called one of the worst movies ever made. Or so says Ebert. This was made in '78, so a lot has changed; if you want a good film about rape and revenge and one that engraves its power into you, watch "Irreversible" unflinchingly. You'll thank me. :D

MCT:July 22, 2008The rape scenes were really excessive, but it made it all the more enjoyable to see her brutally murder the men, although I was disappointed there was no literal spitting on anyones grave... As a film it left something to be desired...

MCT:June 30, 2008When a writer wants to cut loose and get away with committing some truly disturbing acts, without upsetting the audience all they have to do is commit rape/child abuse/animal abuse. Ala, this film. A woman is brutally and repeatedly raped by four men then turns nasty. Yet because of what the men did, their punishments are seen as acceptable, not horrific. So, while it is a good film, that's pretty much all there is to it.

Ewww. Possibly the greatest of the 70's exploitation flicks, banned down under for 17 years or so, and still a pretty difficult watch. This old school revenge flick is satisfying for the retribution, but pretty horrible for the most part. Graphic, painful, raw and stark, it's legendary for all the right reasons, but still difficult to digest or recommend. Camille Keaton must have endured so much to make this proud piece of B movie nastiness. Bad acting aplenty, but if you ever wanna see a guy (justifiably) getting his dick cut off, then this is for you!!!!

Not that thrilled with it, though it was pretty well done production wise and a good use of very limited cast. The naivety of most of the characters was a bit unrealistic though.

I have to say, that though this is a terrible film, there's something one must tip one's hat to, in that the entire last half of the film puts the "revenge" in "rape-revenge." Although I wouldn't go as far as to call it feminist, as a female horror fan, I felt strangely satisfied. Whether or not it makes sense narratively or not, it was like revenge on behalf of so many women in horror films who have no agency.

She recovers from her ordeal then sets out on a violent trail of vengeance to make them pay for what they have done. She exacts her revenge using a rope, a gun, a knife and an axe and not much is left to the imagination!

Rather dated now, but I can see why this was banned in the day of release. The rape scenes were a little daring and certainly showed a frightening experience. The film was a tad boring, but the storyline made a great revenge story

Solid movie. A shocking female exploitation/revenge film. Some very graphic rape scenes, and some gruesome violence. This is one of those movies you only watch once. It teaches a good lesson to back woods type behavior that is still very much alive in some parts of the United States. A Deliverance sort of feel to it. This girl gets it bad. Raped repeatedly, beaten, and verbally assaulted. But wow, does she get hers. You definitely feel her pain, and are cheering her on by the end. One of the best revenge movies that I have seen for sure.
The thing I liked the most about this movie, is how low-budget it is. There is no music or score for music that I can remember. This adds to the feel of the brutality. Scenes that are shocking enough without the heightened effect of adding dramatic music. This flick is bad ass in my book. -

Really repulsive and controversial rape revenge horror flick is a notorious film indeed. Everything you heard of this movie is true, it's a sick and harrowing yet sleazy movie about fememism and revenge.
The castration sequence will make any male viewer cringe their butt off.
