Plot: Barry Levinson (Wag the Dog) directed this comedy-drama about an Armed Forces Radio disc jockey (Robin Williams) whose manic, hilarious delivery from a studio in 1965 Saigon gives U.S. troops i...( read more read more... )n the field a morale boost (while upsetting military brass). Based on the real-life experiences of deejay Adrian Cronauer, the film is actually more concept than story: put Williams in front of a microphone and let him go nuts. Still, the surrounding stuff about the influence upon Cronauer of the endless deaths among his listeners--as Cronauer tries to stay funny while feeling the mounting losses--is affecting. Williams got a much-deserved Oscar nomination for his work. --Tom Keogh

This was a really funny movie, with a cool dramatic twist at the end, and as always Robin Williams has a simply mesmerizing performance.

As Adrian Cronauer, Williams the standup comic finds himself in the toughest of rooms, Saigon, for a slot on Armed Forces Radio during America's escalating war in Asia. With Williams' Gatlin gun shtick, Cronauer brings staticky joy to the beleaguered grunts in the bush and simultaneously runs afoul of the brass trying to maintain military order on the air. Although Good Morning, Vietnam was just one of a firehose blast of late '80s 'Nam pictures (Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Casualties of War), Levinson distinguished it by moving the focus away from the inhumanity of war and to something both smaller and bigger at the same time. Good Morning, Vietnam may not be his most praiseworthy film credit, but it is one of his more commendable turns. In this movie-carrying act, the comedian unleashes his unique talent to spurt off-the-wall ad-libs at lightning speed but he also fares quite well in the film's quieter, more dramatic demands. Overall, Good Morning, Vietnam makes for a pleasant two hours which caters to the skills of its star Robin Williams and the sensibilities of its director Barry Levinson. Far from perfect and with less replayability than many comedies and Vietnam War dramas, the film nonetheless entertains and engages as well as most films.

The funniest radio movie ever made, is Barry Levinson's ambitious Vietnam radio epic. Robin Williams pulls off a best actor level performance as a guy trying to entertain the troops in the unpopular war of the 60s and 70s. Yes, it has drama also. Yes it's kind of dark sometimes. The best stories are the ones that can pull off both and do it well. Bittersweet good vibrations, man.

I enjoyed Robin Williams in this flic. The vietnam war has been the topic of the time out of Hollywood but this is one of the lighter ones.

    WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD...

"Good Morning, Vietnam" has Robin Williams giving his best performance ever. The film is about a news reporter who brings laughter, joy and happiness in Saigon (1965) during the Vietnam War, and learns very important lessons in between, affecting emotionally all of its surrounding characters. Forest Whitaker is great as well. Excellent film. Watch it right now. Emotionally impactful.

Splendid movie. Sure, the hilarious performance of Robin Williams in this film was truly one to be remembered. But, if you go beyond that, you'll be amazed at how beautiful the story of this movie is. Not only does it offer us a vantage glimpse into the Vietnam war, it also tells the tale of how one man, though fictional (I"m assuming Robin William's character was fictional) was able to create a silver lining amidst the dark cloud which was WW2 with his comedy.

Robin Williams and Barry Levinson at their best. Robin Williams needs to do more movies like this where can show his comedic and dramatic talents in a story that most often serious.

It's as subtle as a toolbox falling down an outdoor fire escape, but this classic Robin Williams comedy has enough to keep you amused and waiting for him to get back on the mic. While it certainly is proof that Robin Williams was better in his prime, the story is kinda thin and it feels more like a series of moments rather than a single cohesive movie. Still, Forest Whitaker and Bruno Kirby (RIP) offer up some great performances and it has all the nice, fluffy packaging of a Barry Levinson film. A classic, if not a great one.

This was disappointing, people kept saying how good it was, but it just kept dragging on for too long and I got bored. There WERE some funny parts though.

Lame, Lame, Lame. I never have understood why people find Robin Williams funny and this film is all him acting "funny" and failing miserably. It should have a lot more drama because it is set during the Vietnam War but instead the movie is all about Williams acting the ass. The supporting cast...minus Whitaker, SUCXK at acting. Espeically the asian actors. It was painful to watch the Vietnamese characters "acting". This is a totally over-rated film.

Robin Williams is hillarious in this role as a radio DJ brought in to entertain the troops, only to ecome more and more envolved in all of the fighting. A brilliant film.

This is funny even when you don't understand all of the jokes that Williams throws out, even better when you understand the majority.

What i love about this movie is the fact that it delivers some of the most funniest lines, but can turn into a very serious war drama.
