Jin-Roh - The Wolf Brigade
R
Truely one of the most haunting and beautiful anime's ever produced. Excellent plot and voice-acting. Animation is top notch (the Japanese cast of course) for Production IG's last fully hand drawn feature. Truely moving piece of cinema.

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep
by GaryLikeable enough, user friendly family fare. Predictable and safe to show to Grandma. A little too cute for it's own good at times, but for the most part, very entertaining. Emily Watson is great as usual and the New Zealand support cast were fun to pick out for me. The moral seems to be that even the most strange and unique creatures get annoyed when you try to blow them up. Who'da thunk it? Save it for the kids or the adults with a soft spot for cutesy movies.
Not a bad wee family film, but not exactly a great one either.

Parenthood
by GaryCllassic Steve Martin, sadly remembered for that cowboy birthday party scene. Trust me, there is more. If anything, this is an underrated Drama. New parents (like me) will find plenty to love, and older parents will need a new pair of pants ready. Very funny, sad, realistic and serious. The cast are teriffic throughout, look for an especially young Keanu Reeves in the role he was born for!!! We are all this dysfunctional to some degree,..... right? Fun, sad and ultimately very entertaining!
I'm sure you've all seen this..... but it deserves a revisit.
Oddly enough, one of the best lines came from Keanu Reeves: "You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, to drive a car - hell, you even need a license to catch a fish. But they'll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father."
Couldn't have said it better myself.posted 2 days ago -

American Ninja
by GaryYes, I know... but this is a true guilty pleasure from my youth. I'll always love it for such stupid reasons. It's dumb, schlocky, ridiculous, macho and ultimately a silly kick-ass 80's, direct to video pile of testosteroney. BUT.... I love it! Sorry, it's funny when it's not supposed to be, the ninja action is very cool and Steve James is the poor mans Samuel L. Jackson. 1985 never looked so .... er, well.... ninja-ish. Spawned a bunch of sequels, but the original is still the cult favorite. Trust me folks, it's really good fun!!!
Hell yeah I'm recommending this one!!!
Grew up with it and just can't let it go.
More funny than cool now, but who cares.... it's a cult classic!posted 5 days ago -

Charlie Wilson's War
by GaryClever, fast paced, well written and thought provoking, this intriguing political satire is not only funny, but quite the acting showcase. Hanks and Hoffman play off eachother incredibly well and as the story hits closer and closer to home, it just gets more interesting. The dialogues is fast and sharp, and if it weren't for the amazing special features on the DVD, I would have thought it was pure fiction. Not so. Check out the feature on the real Charlie Wilson to see how scarily true this very clever satire really is. Oh, and Amy Adams is still gorgeous!!
Been putting this one off for a while. Stupid move.
This amazing political satire is funny, clever and scarily true. Check it out!!posted 7 days ago -

See No Evil, Hear No Evil
by GaryThe remarkable duo of Pryor and Wilder reunite in this 80's classic comedy. Yes, it's a bit of a 'one-joke' movie that gets milked for all it's worth, but with laughs like this, who cares? The two leads are just so much fun and while it may be a bit dated, the comedic timing of Richard Pryor is pretty timeless. Joan Severance and a youngish Kevin Spacey make for a sinister duo of baddies, and even if you saw this way back when, I highly recommend revisiting this well loved classic from one of the truly great comedic duos.
Decided to revisit a classic comedy last night, and was left wondering where are the great comedy duos of today?

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
by GaryFinally, the king of supporting actors gets a lead role in this charming little musical biopic take-off. John C Reilly is up to his usual high standard in a chameleonic performance that spans a lifetime. Cameos aplenty are great fun, to the point of overshadowing the comedy, but there are still plenty of laughs to be had. Lighthearted and loads of fun, the music has me wanting to watch it again soon. And, I learned just how easy it is to accidentally cut someone in half with a machete!!! Good fun.
I'm so proud of John C. Reilly.
The man deserves a leading role like this.
Don't miss a great cameo from Jack Black as Paul McCartney, among literally dozens of others.posted 10 days ago -

I Spit on Your Grave
by GaryEwww. Possibly the greatest of the 70's exploitation flicks, banned down under for 17 years or so, and still a pretty difficult watch. This old school revenge flick is satisfying for the retribution, but pretty horrible for the most part. Graphic, painful, raw and stark, it's legendary for all the right reasons, but still difficult to digest or recommend. Camille Keaton must have endured so much to make this proud piece of B movie nastiness. Bad acting aplenty, but if you ever wanna see a guy (justifiably) getting his dick cut off, then this is for you!!!!
Difficult to recommend, but if you don't mind some really nasty 70's exploitation.... here it is!!!
A hard watch, but satisfying and very, very bloody.posted 11 days ago -

Brian's Song
by GaryThis truly classic football movie is bound to get the tear ducts of even the most hardened dude flowing. Not particularly dated since 1971, this TV movie has some amazing performances from James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. The heartwrenching true story of Brian Piccolo not only addresses terminal illness in young people, but racial issues and the male coping mechanism as well. Unofficially recognised as the greatest television movie ever made (according to IMDB). Incredibly sad, beautiful, inspiring and horiffically underwatched. If you can find it, please give it a go!!
I just started a conversation titled "Movies that make guys cry". This was high on my list and I just had to watch it again. Still awesome! Go find it!

The Incredible Hulk
by GaryWhere Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk was poorly recieved in part due to a lack of Hulk Smash style destruction, this reincarnation (while less soulful), makes up for it with an abundance of action and special effects. The story is simple and the Hulk animation seems to owe more to it's games than most other sources. The cast are uniformly good, obligatory Stan Lee cameo ... check! One of the biggest thrills was the appearance of Lou Ferrigno as a security guard (and Hulks voice), and Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark!! Marvel studios is certainly laying some interesting crossover groundwork. Great fun! Even comes complete with lonely guy walking away music... Yes!!!
I told myself that as long as the words "HULK SMASH!" were uttered, I would leave a happy man.
Well they were, and I did, but for so many more reasons than that!posted 19 days ago -

The Tigger Movie
by GaryThe T. I. double G, ERRRR has his own movie, and while it's probably directed at kids, there is so much for everyone to love. Not only is the irrepressable bouncer a whole lotta fun, but the story is touching and fun! The animation is great and the voicework is brilliant (especially Eeyore). Nice family message with some great laughs alot of awwwwww moments. It's a modern childrens classic that everyone can love. Pure goodness and terriffic fun for all. For Tiggers are wonderful things!
So many uninterested friends.
Shame. Great fun for kids, young and old.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
by GaryThe Burton and Depp collaboration strikes again and this time hits the mark beautifully with, of all things, a musical!! The leads are incredibly dark, the story is almost Shakespearian in it's beautiful simplicity and it's just bloody good fun for a person of my dark sensibilities. I loved the musical numbers, but if I had one complaint. it's that those songs aren't all that memorable. The killer ending and amazing atmosphere is enough to make up for it's few minor shortcomings.
I know most of you have seen this.
If you have, don't bother replying to say "I've seen it".
Just giving my review and I LOVED this movie.

Garage Days
by GaryNot a bad little Aussie comedy for those who don't mind a bit of a rambling tale. The laughs are fairly scarce, but any of the scenes involving drug use are pretty hilarious. It tends to become more of a soap opera for much of the middle and the ending is a bit clunky, but the young Australian cast are fun to watch and the soundtrack manages to keep your attention. That said, without the touches of comedy, it's a bit like watching 90 minutes of 'Neighbours'.
Decidedly average Aussie comedy with some of the best hallucination scenes and very little else.

Severance
by GaryBrilliant horror comedy with some truly surprising moments. Not only does it provide some genuine scares, but it manages to turn your expectations on its ear throughout thanks to some masterful editing. The black comedy is darkly hilarious and while gory, never has to resort to 'torture porn'. Some great dialogue and two scantily clad Eastern European hookers are the perfect addition to a pretty damned fine concoction of thrills, scares and laughs. Also look out for the best prosthetic (severed) leg you could wish for.
I had more fun with this than I have with most recent horror comedies. Not for all tastes, but the slightly twisted just might love it!!

Fido
by GaryAwesome and quirky twist on the zombie comedy with zombies as pets and so many opportunities for some laughs. Unfortunately many of them fall flat, but the sheer quirkiness of a 50's zom/com is enough to keep even the most cunical viewer somewhat amused. It's outrageous and dark, but also extremely weird to watch Billy Connolly for 90 minutes without hearing him utter a word, let alone a string of profanity. Fun and very, very different for those who don't mind a bit of a change.
Oh yes! The Zom-Com lives!!!!

Me and You and Everyone We Know
by GaryWhoa!! Director Miranda July is certainly in the same league as Todd Solondz and Gregg Araki in the 'weirdness' category. This little tale of a thinly joined group of imperfect people is a bit of a tough watch, very arty and alot strange. The acting is decent and the story is a bit like a pile of vignettes, but if you don't mind a Sundance special that adresses 'child sexuality' and a guy setting himself on fire within the first 5 minutes, then you might like a few aspects of this self indulgent mess. Definitely not for young audiences.
I somehow stumbled upon this weird little Indie movie this week, and while it's not great, fans of David Lynch, Gregg Araki or Todd Solondz will find plenty to scratch their head over. Very weird and not entirely in a good way.

Rogue
by GaryOh Hell Yeah! Brilliant monster movie without the silliness of radioactivity, genetic mutation or alien involvement. Just a bad-ass 7 metre crocodile and the obligatory, unfortunate tourists A.K.A. 'lunch'. Yes, it's fairly formulaic, but with this many "holy shit" moments, you don't mind its predictability. The relatively unknown cast does a great job of building tension with a less than astounding script and while it gets a little silly toward the end, the bulk of the movie is intense. Don't miss the amazing Northern Territory scenery and the hilarious choice of music for the end credits!!
Awesome! I loved it!!
Having lived in the Northern Territory of Australia a few years back, the locations are just gorgeous and the crocodile legends are true to life. 'Rogue' stretches the truth a little, but to great effect.

Good Morning, Vietnam
by GaryIt's as subtle as a toolbox falling down an outdoor fire escape, but this classic Robin Williams comedy has enough to keep you amused and waiting for him to get back on the mic. While it certainly is proof that Robin Williams was better in his prime, the story is kinda thin and it feels more like a series of moments rather than a single cohesive movie. Still, Forest Whitaker and Bruno Kirby (RIP) offer up some great performances and it has all the nice, fluffy packaging of a Barry Levinson film. A classic, if not a great one.
Do you guys have any of those classic movies that you've just never seen?
Well, this was one of mine and after 20 years I finally saw this for the first time last night. (Weird huh?).
Anyway, it was alright and I think I'll survive another 20 years without seeing it again.posted 32 days ago -

Enough
by GarySurprisingly watchable thriller turned revenge flick that really threw my expectations for a loop. Jennifer Lopez pulls off a pretty good performance (for her) and while the story is predictable and has been done many times over, you can't help but ride it out to the end, if only to see some ass kicking. It's not 'high art' by any means, but its predictable mediocrity is an entertaining enough way to kill a couple of hours. Will get the girls more hyped up than a bucket of espresso!
My almost non-existent faith in 'J-Lo's' acting ability ('Out of Sight' excepted) got a rather nice surprise with this very average thriller.
Not nearly as terrible as I was expecting.posted 32 days ago
